Welcome to the
McCarter Elementary Library
Say you're readingThe Last Straw from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and you want to know the next book to read in the series. You decide to look it up by series title. Remember, the title of the series is different than the title of the book. The title of this book is The Last Straw. The title of the series is Diary of a Wimpy Kid. To see all of the series, you click "Series Title":
You will then see a page that looks like this:
All of the series titles are in alphabetical order and all of the series on this page start with the letter "A". You click on the "D" at the top because Diary of a Wimpy Kid starts with what letter? That's right: D! That will take you to this page:
The series are still in alphabetical order, but all of these series start with the letter D. Do you see Diary of a Wimpy Kid? If you clicked on it, you would see this screen:
You were reading The Last Straw and now you can see that the next book in the series is Dog Days. After Dog Days you will need to read The Ugly Truth and then Cabin Fever. The newest book in the series is The Third Wheel because it is the last one listed.
If you didn't know the name of the series you were reading, but you knew the author was Rick Riordan, you could look the books up by clicking "Book Author" instead of "Series Title" and then clicking "R" for Riordan (always click the first letter of the author's LAST name). The website will then show you all of the books Rick Riordan has written, including all of his series in order. It would look like this:
Pretty cool, huh?
Series Books
A series is a set of books that have certain things in common and are thought of as a group. Most fiction series have the same main characters in every book (like Harry, Hermione, and Ron in the Harry Potter series), but not all series are like that. Some series have books about different characters (like in the American Girls series). Some series are written by the same author, such as how all of the books in the Magic Treehouse series are written by Mary Pope Osborne. Other series, like The 39 Clues, have many different authors. We have lots of great series in the McCarter Elementary library, including:
Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Kane Chronicles
Dork Diaries Percy Jackson and the Olympians
Magic Tree House The Mysterious Benedict Society
39 Clues Bone
Junie B. Jones Babymouse
Judy Moody Cam Jansen
Geronimo Stilton American Girl
Harry Potter Fly Guy
The Spiderwick Chronicles The Boxcar Children
A Series of Unfortunate Events Nancy Drew
The Heroes of Olympus The Chronicles of Narnia
But what happens if you're reading the books in a series and you don't know which book comes next? That's when you go to The Midcontinent Public Library Juvenile Series and Sequels website! This website lets you search by book title, author, series title, or series subject. The home page looks like this:
