Check Out and Book Care

McCarter student check out policies are as follows:

  • Students in Grade K are allowed to check out one book per week, during their library class.

  • Students in Grades 1-5 are allowed to check out two books per week, during their library class.

  • All students may check out books for class inquiry projects in addition to the 1-2 books they check out for fun.

  • Books may be kept for one week before they are considered overdue.

  • If a student has a book that has been overdue for longer than two weeks, an overdue notice will be sent home with the student alerting the parents to the overdue book and asking for their help in locating it or paying for it.

  • If a student finishes a library book early (before their next library period), they may bring the book to the library and exchange it for a new one.

  • Students may not check out books for other students.

  • All students who have returned or paid for their library books will be invited to an end-of-the-year popcorn and movie party in the library.

McCarter students learn and practice the following book care guidelines:

  • Always keep your book in a safe place, such as in your bookbag, on a bookshelf, on your nightstand, or in your desk. Your book does not want to go for a roller coaster ride.

  • Always use a bookmark to mark your place in a book instead of bending the corner of a page. Books want to keep their straight pages so they can look cool, just like you.

  • Always keep your book away from younger siblings who may draw on it or rip out pages. Books need you to help protect them from baby attacks.

  • Always keep your book away from pets who may chew it up. Books and pets are not BFFs.

  • Never read your book in the bathtub or leave it outside where it could get wet. You know how your fingers get wrinkly like a raisin if you've been in the water too long? So do the pages of books...except they never straighten out again.

  • Never eat or drink while reading your book and always make sure your hands are clean before reading. Your book can't take a bath, so if it gets dirty, it stays dirty.

  • Never use your book for anything other than reading or doing research for school. Books don't like to be used as stepstools, doorstops, weapons, or trays for dinner.
