Pura Belpré Awards
 

These awards are named after Pura Belpré, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library. The Pura Belpré Awards are given annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. Two awards are given annually: one for an author and one for an illustrator. An additional 1-3 books are each given the Pura Belpré Honor. These books were the runner-ups for the Pura Belpré Awards.

Newbery Medal

 

The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded each year to an American author of the most outstanding book written for children that year. An additional 2-4 books per year are awarded the Newbery Honor. These books were the runner-ups for the Newbery Medal.

The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded each year to the artist/illustrator of the best American picture book for children. An additional 2-5 books per year are awarded the Caldecott Honor. These books were the runner-ups for the Caldecott Medal.

Coretta Scott King Awards

 

The Coretta Scott King Book Awards are given each year to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that show an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values. The award honors the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and honors his wife, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace and world brotherhood. Two awards are given annually: one for an author and one for an illustrator. An additional 1-3 books each are given the Coretta Scott King Honor. These books were the runner-ups for the Coretta Scott King Book Awards.
